Once your dog has mastered the art of appropriate toileting, it's handy if they can have some way to let you know when they want to go outside. Some dogs bark, some scratch at the door, and both of these can cause problems.
Sally Marchant, from Naturally Happy Dogs, has an ingenious solution: teach them to ring a bell to signal that they want to go outside. It doesn't damage anything, doesn't encourage barking and is a unique signal so that you know it only means one thing.
It's also a fantastic trick to show off when friends come round. The bell goes, they look confused and you say "it's just the dog asking to go to outside so they can toilet"!
